Side-stream filtration of Data Centre Chilled Water System
Problem
This chilled water system in recent years has had a history of poor water quality as a result of acidic conditions resulting in high levels of suspended iron and corrosive conditions which can be a common situation.
It was thought that the solids may be ‘organic’ in nature and could originate from biofilms within the system. This caused:
- A high corrosion rate within the system reducing the life span of the entire system
- Damage to system components
- Reduction in energy/performance efficiency of the chilled water system
- Increased manpower for system repairs and maintenance
Solution
The filter system was connected in side-stream configuration as detailed above and installed such that mains water was used to facilitate self-cleaning backwash cycles to ensure glycol levels were maintained.
Following installation of the unit the filter was commissioned and left operational on 26th August, the unit was revisited on 28th August, only 48 hours after commissioning, to assess the efficacy of the filter. Overall, the client experienced:
- Improved performance of water treatment/system chemicals
- Reduction in rate of corrosion extending lifespan of whole system
- Improvement in energy/performance efficiency reducing energy costs as heat transfer is improved
- Reduction in system maintenance requirement lowering running costs
- Reduced water and chemical losses as system flushing is avoided
Advantages
Advantages of the Velocitek OVF 350 system for this application:
- Filtration grades achieved down to 10-0.45 micron nominal
- High efficiency filtration providing minimal backwash loss
- High flow rate for system size, small system footprint
- Greater control over biological growth
- Low power consumption
- Fully Automatic system
- Low maintenance and zero consumables
